Moy Salmon Festival since 1964
Make Memories at the Ballina Salmon Festival

The festival first took place in Ballina in 1964 and was at the time called the ‘Moy Salmon Festival’.  The original organisers knew that the town was home to one of the best Rivers in Ireland with the best fishing waters and salmon in the country.

Bunaíodh an chéad féile in mBéal an Átha i 1964 darb ainm "Moy Salmon Festival". Bhí a fhios ag na h-eagraithe bunaidh, go raibh cáil ag baint leis an mbaile, mar gheall ar an habhann is fearr in Éirinn, ó thaobh na h-hiascaireacht agus na mbradán den scoth, atá le fáil ann.

They decided to rename the festival the ‘Ballina Salmon Festival’ which today is a leading community based festival in the West of Ireland and the highlight of the summer months. Every year over 200,000 people descend on the North Mayo capital to enjoy an eight-day festival that is estimated to bring millions to the local economy.

Rinneadh an cinneadh chun athainmniú an féile go "Ballina Salmon Festival". Sa lá aná inniú ann, is í an féile seo, an féile is mó atá bunaithe sa phoball, san h-iarthar na hÉireann agus ar ndóigh,an buaic-eachtra is fearr den míosa an tSamhraidh. Gach bhliain, tagann breis is 200,000 daoine go dtí an príomhbhaile tuaisceart MhaighEo, chun sult agus taitneamh a bhaint as an féile, a mhaireann 8 lae. Is fiú na milliúin don cheantar eacnamaíocht, dá bharr.

The festival has been through its ups and downs since it first took off in 1964, with it slipping through the cracks in the last recession in the 80’s.  But since 1991 it has come back and continues to thrive.  The festival has a price tag of over €280,000 when entertainment and all associated costs are paid.  This money is generated through fund-raising and some grant aid.  A team of over thirty volunteers work all year round to compile, organise and market a ‘programme of events’ to span the duration of the festival and cater for the young and old alike.

Níl gan an tsuáilce agus an duáilce ag an féile seo ó bunaithe Agus is Léir go raibh dearmaid déanta aici mar gheall ar an gcúlú na 80í. Ó 1991, tá dul chun chinn tagtha uirthi  agus tá sí ag dul ó neart go neart. Costaíonn an féile seo níos mó ná €280,000. Tagann an chuid den airgid sin ó bhailiú agus ó cúnamh deontais. Obraíonn 30 foireann dheonach, ó cheann ceann na bliana, ag cúir le chéile, ag eagrú agus ag ullmhú clár imeachtaí, a mbaineann idir óg agus aosta sult as.

The Ballina Salmon Festival is proud of its family-centered focus with an action packed programme that includes old favourites like Lady of the Moy, Heritage Day, Street Rag, Mardi Gras and Firework Display, along with river based events like fishing competitions and raft races.  New events are introduced annually to keep the festival fresh and up-to-date with modern life expectations.  One third of the festival’s entire programme is dedicated solely to children.  When such an extensive line-up is considered, the workload truly is immense so the festival committee is urging all those who can help, either financially or voluntarily, to please lend a hand.

Tá an "Ballina Salmon Festival" an bhródúil as an  gclár don chlann go léir, agus na heachtraí is fearr; "The lady of the Moy", "Heritage day", "mardi Gras" agus an "Fireworks display". Baintear úsáid as an habhann iontach le h-imeachtaí cois habhann cómh mhaith mar cómórtasaí hiascaireachtaí agus rásaí rafta. Cuireann eachtraí nua in úil do dhaoine gach bhliain, chun féile a bheith úr agus nua-aimseartha. Tá an tríú chuid den chlár díograiseacht don pháistí amháin. Tríd is tríd, bíonn ualach oibre ollmhór ar na h-oibrí deonach na fhéile.
Gríosaigh an coiste fhéile, duine ar bith, lámh chúnta a thabhairt, bealach amháin nó bealach eile. Míle buíochas!
